Before doing anything really stupid to my computer, can anybody tell me if an openbios is a reasonable thing to try!?

If you have hardware that supports it, and a way to rescue yourself if you flash a bad BIOS image onto your motherboard, then sure give LinuxBIOS a try. But it’s still a bit of work, because nobody like Asus actually makes a motherboard that’s designed to fully work with LinuxBIOS, at least as far as I know.
