GMail Woes

Has anyone else noticed that GMail has become increasingly unreliable lately? Often I find that it won’t open my inbox, or the page will need refreshing several times for it to load; also, after composing e-mails and clicking send, the e-mails are just not being sent while the interface hangs - very frustrating!

I’ve been thinking about moving to Evolution or Thunderbird, but I find that GMail’s IMAP support is frustrating, not dealing well with archiving and deleting mail.

What do other people do for their e-mail? My attempts at starting a free web-apps co-operative weren’t very succesful (clearly!) but I think projects like Bongo look promising.

I haven’t had time to look into it but I have also experienced the same problem when accessing GMail from one of my laptops.

It’s really lame but I’ve just been using their plan ‘ol html version since the problem began.

I like to think Bongo is promising We could do with more hackers of all varieties, but I do hope that quite soon we will have a solution to the kind of problem you’re talking about.

@Alex, are you just talking about the software, or providing some kind of service as well?

There’s not really any way I can host my own server for my mail, at least not alone, even if the software was in a really usable state. Would love it if we could find some way to set up a service based around Bongo, as I’ve blogged about before, but I think that’s more of a dream!

Thanks for the work with Bongo though, I wish my skills were code related and then I’d help out…

I haven’t had that problem with Gmail. A friend of mine did, but we ran it down to some of the plugins he had. Not sure which of the firefox addtions it was.. but turning them off it worked fine.. and he had so many I didn’t have time to do 1×1 checking.

I’m using FastMail. I’m pretty happy with it. I’ve had good experiences with TuffMail as well. They aren’t free, but worth paying for if your e-mail is important.

Yes, i have had increasing problems too - both on my google apps account as well as on my personal gmail account. First of all both IE and Firefox consume increasing amounts of memory over time. I thought it was firefox at first but IE has the same problem. And over the last week or so frequently i have to shift to html mode or restart the browser - stuff like that.
